Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage? Comparing the Korean-market Twins

Tucson and Sportage from Korea share a platform and engines, so what differs? Design, trims, Korean vs Gulf engines and what to check before you buy.

Nearly the same car underneath

The Hyundai Tucson (NX4, 2020 on) and the Kia Sportage (NQ5, 2021 on) share a platform and, in Korea, the same engines: a 1.6 turbo petrol, a 2.0 diesel and a 1.6 turbo hybrid. Reliability, servicing and parts supply are therefore very close; the real differences are design, equipment and the condition of the individual car.

Design and interior

The Tucson has the parametric grille with daytime lights hidden inside it; the Sportage has boomerang lights and, on upper trims, curved twin screens. Both get large screens and the full driver-assistance set on the top trims (Inspiration on the Tucson, Signature on the Sportage). Pick the look you prefer; you give nothing up mechanically.

Which engine for the Gulf?

For both, the 1.6 turbo petrol is the practical choice: Korea doesn't sell the larger petrol engines Gulf dealers offer, and Hyundai and Kia dealers in the Gulf service the 1.6 turbo. The diesel is cheaper in Korea but needs low-sulphur diesel; the hybrid is very economical, but battery service depends on your local dealer.

How to actually choose

Because the two are so close, the inspection report and the price decide: a car with no frame damage and lower mileage beats a pricier one with a worse report. Compare the live prices on the two model pages, then send us the two cars you like and we send both reports and the final price for each.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, the Tucson or the Sportage?

Mechanically they are nearly identical (same platform and engines). Choose the design you prefer, then decide on the individual car's inspection report, mileage and price.
